刘易斯,1898年出生在爱尔兰的有钱人家,从小就喜欢躲在小阁楼上耽读、幻想。9岁失去母亲的经历,直接影响了他笔下魔法世界的诞生。他26岁登上牛津大学教席,人称“最伟大的牛津人”。他60岁遇到一生挚爱,却在两年后遭遇天人永隔之苦。他1963年离开人世之前,就为十年后才去世的挚友托尔金写好了讣文。因为只有写出了《纳尼亚传奇》的人,才有资格说他真正了解《魔戒》的作者。20世纪的基督教骑士:C.S.刘易斯(C.S.Lewis 1898-1963)全名为克里夫·斯坦普斯·刘易斯[Clive Staples Lewis],是一位有名的学者、文学批评家兼作家,对于中古及文艺复兴时期的英国文学尤有研究。中国的读者会认识他,多半拜他的系列儿童故事《纳尼亚年代记》所赐。刘易斯1898年11月29曰生于北爱尔兰首府贝尔法斯特的一个清教徒之家。童年时代生活平静安逸,但9岁时母亲不幸去世,随后他就被送往英格兰一所严格的寄宿学校。在丧母的悲痛与学校环境的压抑中,他很自然地在文学创作和学术研究里寻求安慰,并对形而上学和终极问题发生了浓厚的兴趣。中学时的刘易斯迷上了瓦格纳歌剧中的北欧神话世界,16岁时为准备牛津大学的入学考试,他接受父亲的老校长柯克·派崔克的指导,在文学和哲学方面得到了良好的古典式训练。但入校攻读哲学后不久,刘易斯就在1917年应征入伍,调往法国前线。翌年四月他中弹受伤,辗转遣返伦敦疗养。1925至1954年在牛津大学任教,当选为牛津大学马格达伦学院研究员,担任英语与文学教职长达29年,教授古典文学。1954至1963年任剑桥大学中世纪及文艺复兴时期文学教授。1944年2月到4月间,刘易斯每天上午在BBC电台发表“超越个人”的广播讲话,向战时的人们,尤其是士兵和伤员们解释基督教信仰。这些广播讲话在大西洋两岸广受欢迎,确立了他作为二十世纪基督教最重要阐释者与宣扬者的名声。58岁时,他同一位比他年轻17岁、离过婚的美国妇女海伦结婚,但几年后海伦即患癌症去世。刘易斯本人卒于1963年11月22曰。
